Sheptytsky became a symbol of mercy and humanity. His actions to save Jews from the Holocaust left a deep mark on history, demonstrating the power of faith and moral courage.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1941, when German troops occupied Lviv, the Jewish community was threatened with extermination. The Nazi policy of genocide left no chance of survival. At that time, Andriy Sheptytsky, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, was already known as a spiritual leader who advocated justice and unity. Despite his own illnesses and advanced age, he could not remain aloof from the tragedy unfolding before his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metropolitan Sheptytsky used his authority and the resources of the church to organize the rescue of Jews. He instructed monasteries and parishes to provide shelter to those hiding from the Nazis. Many Jewish children were saved because monasteries, such as Svyatoyursky in Lviv or the Studite monasteries, took them in under the guise of Christian orphans. Sheptytsky personally provided forged documents, including baptismal certificates, which helped to conceal their Jewish origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those who received help was the young Adam Daniel Rotfeld, the future Polish Foreign Minister, who was hidden in the Studite monastery in Un\u00f3w. Another example is the brothers Kurt and Nathan Levin, whom Sheptytsky entrusted to his brother, Father Klymenty Sheptytsky, to hide. These stories are just a few of the hundreds of lives saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to practical assistance, Sheptytsky openly condemned Nazi crimes. In 1942, he wrote a pastoral letter \u201cDo Not Kill\u201d, in which he urged his flock not to participate in violence and not to collaborate with the occupiers. This letter was an act of extraordinary courage, since open criticism of the Nazis could have cost him his life. He also appealed to the German authorities with protests against the persecution of Jews, although this did not stop the repressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheptytsky&#8217;s actions carried enormous risks. The Nazis closely monitored the activities of the church, and any assistance to Jews was punishable by death. However, the metropolitan remained steadfast. He collaborated with underground organizations that supplied food and medicine to the ghetto, and even hid Jews in his residence on Svyatoyurska Gora. His brother Klymenty and other clergymen also took an active part in this dangerous mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the efforts of Andrei Sheptytsky and his assistants, an estimated 150 to 200 Jews, mostly children, were saved. His work became an example of how faith and humanism can withstand the most cruel tests. After the war, many of those rescued remembered Sheptytsky with deep gratitude, and his name became a symbol of hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1991, Yad Vashem, Israel\u2019s Holocaust memorial, recognized Andrei Sheptytsky as a candidate for the title of \u201cRighteous Among the Nations\u201d.
