Abraham Manevich (1881-1942) \u2013 is an important part of the formation of the Ukrainian art school of impressionism, associated with the European trends of the modern period. Manevich entered the history of Ukrainian art as one of the pioneers of national modernism. His work became a bright phenomenon in Ukraine in the 1st half of the 20th century.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his life, the artist created unique images, in which throughout his creative life he sought his own methods of reflecting the surrounding space, improving and expanding his own pictorial techniques. Manevich was an active participant in the reform of Ukrainian art, changing stereotypes of local provinciality, bringing the Ukrainian school of painting to the world level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abraham Manevich was born in 1881 in Mstislavl, Mogilev province, into a patriarchal Jewish family. He early showed an ability to draw, and it was Kyiv that attracted him with the opportunity to become an artist. In 1901-1905 he studied at the Kyiv Art School, where he formed the core of the Ukrainian avant-garde with O. Bogomazov, O. Ekster, O. Arkhipenko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manevich continued his studies abroad \u2013 at the Munich Academy of Arts and the Anton Azhbe School, one of the leading art institutions in Europe at the time. Manevich’s first exhibitions \u2013 in 1907 (Munich Kunstverein gallery) and in 1909 (Kyiv City Museum) \u2013 were a great success. The Kyiv press wrote at the time: \u201cA unique master has appeared in domestic art with his unusual understanding of the intimate beauty of the landscape, a far from superficial attitude towards nature, and a sincere fusion with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Manevich’s works, Kyiv occupies a special place – the city in which he was fascinated, and which became his main inspiration as the basis for further dynamic and structural transformations in it. When reproducing the elements of the composition, Manevich used a single distribution of light and shadow, covering the plane with a two-dimensional chromatic pattern. The images create the impression of formal objectivity, reproducing the schematic construction of objects. Saturated shades of colors are distributed in delimited areas, the colors are intense and filled with hidden dynamism – the works “Symphony of Spring” (1912), “Landscape of Kurenivka” (1914), “Spring on Kurenivka” (1914); with renewed picturesque and structural plasticity – the landscapes “City” (1917) and “Province” (1919).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manevich’s works are the perception and depiction of objects around him in relation to the surrounding spatial and light-air environment as a reflection of glare, color relations of light and shadow. For him, modern is a way of feeling the world with a very pronounced symbolic basis, as well as a way of seeing the world, with its lines, planes and colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1913, an exhibition of Manevich\u2019s works was held in Paris at the prestigious Durand-Ruel gallery \u2013 the pioneer of the famous Impressionists. The Parisian public, accustomed to seeing paintings by Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Cezanne, and Gauguin in these halls, admired the landscapes of the Kyiv painter. Private collectors and major museums became interested in Manevich\u2019s works. One painting was purchased by the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts and the Luxembourg Museum in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The transition from changing impressionist algorithms to an understanding of the inextricable interconnectedness of the universe, as in the work of the post-impressionists, can be seen in Manevich’s work “Rural Landscape” (1913). A similar motif was repeatedly reproduced by C\u00e9zanne in 1880-1890. In Manevich’s work, color does not reproduce impressive light effects, but is a tool for constructively conveying the form of an object. He intensified the emotional load of color, bringing it to the level of expressive and decorative communication and emphasizing the balance of all elements of the composition. Manevich’s new synthesized perception of reality encompassed all elements of the picturesque structure in plane and volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manevich’s consistent adaptation of his experience manifested itself in two trends: impressionism (1906-1914) and post-impressionism (1912-1927). After his first stay abroad, the artist’s manner underwent changes: the soft, chamber nature of the landscapes gave way to a bright, saturated palette, wide, free brushstrokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1917, Manevich was invited to the position of professor of landscape painting at the Ukrainian Academy of Arts in Kyiv, created to support and develop Ukrainian national culture and art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1919-1920, Manevich became an active member of the \u201cCulture-League\u201d \u2013 a Jewish cultural and public organization, the purpose of which was the development of education, literature and theater in the Yiddish language, as well as Jewish music and fine arts. He took an active part in the creation of the \u201cKultur-League\u201d Museum of Plastic Arts in Kyiv. The ideology of the \u201cKultur-League\u201d had a huge influence on all of Manevich\u2019s subsequent work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After moving to the United States in 1921, Manevich’s style underwent certain changes. His desire to find the optimal ratio of color, light, and form was enriched by a pictorial language. In the 1910s, Manevich’s main tool was a textured brushstroke, with which he outlined the canvas, reminiscent of the style of Van Gogh; in the 1920s-1930s, Manevich replaced this specific tool with a structural chromatic planar modeling like that of Cezanne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In America, Manevich completed his most dramatic work, begun in Ukraine, \u201cThe Destruction of the Ghetto.\u201d A pile of half-destroyed houses, a sunset red as blood, and a black goat. This canvas united the artist\u2019s childhood memories, the brutal pogroms of the civil war, and the pain of his lost son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In America, Manevich’s romantic mood changed under the influence of industrial rhythms. The creative inspiration depicted in his homeland in an emotional impressionistic manner gave way to a rational and constructive style. In 1925-1927, Manevich created a series of urban landscapes “Prosaic America”, where he showed the contrasts of the modern city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manevich’s works, filled with life, subtly reflect the depth of space. His decorative and constructive vision of nature is organically combined with the deep emotionality of its perception. His stylized forms are emphasized by expressive, emotional colors and lines that “live, think, worry, rejoice, suffer and fight,” said David Burliuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a follower of impressionism, Manevich did not record nature, but, manipulating color and contrast, explored its inner meaning to create a generalized image as a state of a phenomenon, rather than a current moment of being. Color for Manevich is an innovative tool for forming forms, a means of transmitting conventional ideas about space, perspective, and symbolic meaning. Manevich accepted and partially applied the ideas of planar modeling using chromatic shades, like the founders of Fauvism, Matisse, Marquet, and Rouault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the urban images of America, Manevich transformed his reproduction of linear-spatial perspective, creating spatial depth on the plane. Similar approaches were used by C\u00e9zanne (for example, \u201cHouse in Provence\u201d, 1890). C\u00e9zanne\u2019s manner influenced Manevich\u2019s rethinking of the essence of objects in his landscapes. In Manevich\u2019s work, a street with multi-story buildings is also interpreted as a monolithic organism formed by single chromatic structures (\u201cHouses in the Bronx\u201d, 1925). Here, in a complex compositional structure, Manevich used a uniform formal-schematic distribution of light and shadow, creating a holistic architectural unity that has a special material significance in relation to the contrast with the immaterial horizon. Thus, Manevich adopted the simplification and geometrization of forms typical of C\u00e9zanne, which support the overall picturesque monumentality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A study of Manevich’s pictorial transformation in 1915-1927 showed that he introduced a number of techniques that established him as a prominent representative of Ukrainian Impressionism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 flat decorative distribution of composition elements;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 generalization of natural images at the level of symbolic metaphor;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 formal modeling of chromatic planes;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 a conventional idea of \u200b\u200bperspective, space, and depth, through the alternation of chromatic colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manevich’s role is unique in that he made the Ukrainian tradition of impressionism a worthy part of world art of the 20th century. Mastering the techniques of impressionism turned out to be a driving force for the artist. Manevich, expressing his own impressions of the moment, as, for example, in the landscape he created \u201cSpring on Kurenivka in Kyiv\u201d (1915). Manevich did not seek to copy, but masterfully reinterpreted the canons of French impressionism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Studying the life and work of Abraham Manevich, we discover how prominent a role he played among the founders of Ukrainian modern art, for whom painting was more than a vocation, but, more importantly, a social mission in which their brilliant civic potential and sense of national pride were revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
