Modern people can no longer imagine their life without photography – a miracle that allows you to record important moments of life. Photography has become an integral attribute of society’s life and is widely used in all professional and personal spheres. Today, people actively use the opportunity to record images as they see them with their own eyes. However, few people know about the beginning of the era of photography. At the same time, the enterprising intellect of people who worked on photography faced numerous difficulties and did not immediately open the way to its future.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first photograph is the work of the French inventor Joseph Ni\u00e9pce. In his research, Ni\u00e9pce initially failed, trying to transfer a stable image to various surfaces in such a way that it would not disappear when removed from the camera obscura. When exposed to light, the image faded and lost the outlines recorded on it. Many predecessors were engaged in similar research, but for various reasons did not finish their work. People who were engaged in such experiments even gained the reputation of rich idlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ni\u00e9pce managed to take the first photograph that retains clear outlines. The plate, covered with a layer of bitumen, showed the view from the window of his workshop in Le Gras. The photograph, which was recorded for about 8 hours, was taken in 1826 and is still stored in a research center in Texas. By the way, Ni\u00e9pce’s first invention was the pyrolophore – an internal combustion engine that could be used to propel a boat along the Seine, but this invention did not find application at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ni\u00e9pce’s research was continued by the French artist and inventor Louis Daguerre, who was also fascinated by photography. The world’s first photograph with a person in the frame was Daguerre’s photograph “Boulevard Temple” in 1839. The exposure lasted about 10 minutes, which made it impossible to photograph people on a busy street, but he managed to capture a person having his shoes polished long enough for him to appear in the photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 9, 1839, Daguerre presented to the French Academy of Sciences the process of obtaining a daguerreotype – an image on a light-sensitive metal plate, and 10 days later the French government declared Daguerre’s invention a “gift to the world.” Daguerreotype is considered the first method of photography. In the same 1839, Sir John Herschel made the first glass negative instead of a metal one and coined the term “photography” (from the Greek words for “light” and “writing”). The first color photograph, an image of a checkered ribbon, was taken in 1861 by the famous Scottish physicist James Maxwell, who is well known for his work in the field of electromagnetism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the invention of photography, artists feared that painting would become unnecessary, but these fears were in vain – photography became a separate art. The invention of photographic film made photography a mass hobby and found it widely used, in particular in science. For example, with its help, scientists began to record unique astronomical phenomena. Thanks to the efforts of astronomer-photographers, Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity found visual confirmation: photos of displaced celestial bodies and the gravity of the Sun during a solar eclipse became a sensation in the scientific world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photography was brought to Ukraine in the 1840s by foreign photographers who participated in the annual international Kyiv fairs (\u201cContracts\u201d). The first photographer-settler in Kyiv was the Frenchman Charles-Paul Herbst. In the 1860s-1890s, the first photo studios opened in Odessa, Kharkiv, Poltava, and other large cities. By 1914, about 70 commercial photographers were working in Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1888, the American company Kodak released a camera with a 100-frame film for $25, and in 1900, the Kodak Brownie camera began to be sold in large quantities for just $1 and a 6-frame film for 15 cents. This made photography a mass hobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the Jewish photographers of the first half of the 19th century, the widely known American artist Shlomo Nunez Carvalho (1815-1897) became a photographer accompanying John Charles Fr\u00e9mont’s expedition to the Far East. The active activity of Jewish photographers began only in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But already in the first decades of the 20th century, the contribution of Jews to the development of photography became very noticeable, not only in its technical improvement, but also in the development of the aesthetics of photo art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earliest photographs of the Land of Israel date back to the mid-19th century, mostly species and genre shots, many of which are published in Nissan Peretz’s book The East in the Lens (1988). The first Israeli photographers were Yaakov Ben Dov, Alfred Bernheim, and Shmuel Yosef Schweig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the genre of documentary Jewish photography, the ethnographic expeditions of Semyon Ansky, who was accompanied as a photographer by Solomon Yudovin, whose photographs captured the life of towns and objects of material Jewish culture, are of great importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American-Jewish “patron of modern art” Alfred Stieglitz made photography an art form. His street photographs are widely known for their avant-garde approach. Stieglitz also owned several art galleries in New York City, where he introduced European avant-garde artists to the American public. Together with Fred Holland Day, Stieglitz founded the “Photo-Secession”, the first photographic art movement, which set as its main task to show the photograph not only as a picture of the object, but also the work of the photographer, thanks to which the object was photographed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stieglitz also popularized art photography in the magazines he founded, Camera Notes and Camera Work. In 1896, Stieglitz became vice president of the new association of New York photographers he founded, the Camera Club of New York. He laid the foundations for portrait, landscape, urban, and documentary photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the late 1930s, there was a sharp rise in American photography in the new modern style, in particular due to the appearance of mass illustrated magazines, the most popular of which were Time, Look, and Life. Time magazine published the works of American-Jewish photographers Bruce Davidson, Arthur Siegel, Alexander Lieberman, Cornell Cap (Friedman), and others. By the way, a native of Kiev, Lieberman became the art editor of the largest fashion magazine, Vogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most famous photographers of Life magazine were Alfred Eisenstadt, Yale Joel, David Sherman, Eliot Elisofon. Arthur Rothstein collaborated with the magazine “Luk”. The pages of these magazines embodied various aspects of artistic and documentary-realistic photography. Photojournalism became one of the main forms of visual information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eliot Elisofon was one of the first photographers to use color filters: by purposefully changing the color of objects and their proportions, he achieved the effect he wanted. Thus, in the work “Moulin Rouge” (1951), he refers the viewer to the cabaret-themed works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, reproducing compositional principles in a coloristic range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photojournalism classic Alfred Eisenstadt is known for his many talented reportage shots, which feature world leaders in informal settings, and ordinary passers-by reveal their characters in familiar surroundings. He is the author of the famous picture \u201cThe Kiss in Times Square\u201d. Eisenstadt photographed Winston Churchill, Somerset Maugham, Bernard Shaw, Ernest Hemingway, Sophia Loren and many other celebrities. He made photo reports about the Nobel Prize ceremony and the inauguration of John Kennedy. Eisenstadt took a big risk during a press conference of Joseph Goebbels, when the Nazi minister found out that he was being photographed by a Jew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eisenstadt changed the American notion of good photography at the time as pleasant, idealized. As the lead photographer for the Associated Press in Berlin, Eisenstadt photographed the Italo-Abyssinian War, but not in a heroic aspect, but through death, pain, suffering. He did not prefer a panoramic, survey plan, but a large one (for example, “The Ethiopian Soldier”, 1935). This style of photojournalism was characteristic of avant-garde German photography from the early 1930s. Eisenstadt, who emigrated to America, worked for 40 years at Life magazine, from its founding in 1936.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robert Capa (Andr\u00e9 Friedman) was born in Budapest, lived and worked in Berlin, and in 1933 went to Paris, where he became a photojournalist for several French publications. Capa became famous thanks to a series of dramatic reports about the Spanish Civil War (“Death of a Republican Soldier”, 1936). War reporting became the main direction of Capa’s activity – he filmed the Japanese intervention in China (1938), and from the beginning of World War II he was a photojournalist for Life magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capa filmed such famous events as the Allied landings in Normandy, the liberation of Paris, etc. From 1948 to 1950, he was in Israel, where he filmed battles in the War of Independence, and after its end, he made a series about the formation and everyday life of Israel (“Meeting of the First Knesset”, “Elections”, a portrait of the first president Chaim Weizmann, and many others).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, in collaboration with Irwin Shaw, he published one of the first books about Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his 18 years of work, Capa was a photographer in five wars and died during the Indochina War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American photographer Ezra Stoler (1915-2004) dedicated his work to architectural photography, creating a series of panoramic architectural landscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Onion magazine photographer Arthur Rothstein (1915-1985) was a recognized master of documentary photography. During the Great Depression, he worked for the Farmers’ Protection Committee and shot poignant, realistic photo reports of human suffering in drought-stricken areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A special place in modern American photography belongs to photo-artists who consider photography as one of the types of fine art. The creator of the “new reality” in photography, Aharon Ziskind (1903-1991), was engaged not only in documentary photography, but also in fine art, creating expressionist, abstract and minimalist works (“Wall Pattern”, 1960).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ziskind headed the photography department at the Chicago Institute of Technology, where his students included many Jewish photographers \u2013 Jerome Lieblin, M. Dworkin, Bernard Freemesser, Jerry Ulsman, a master of surrealist photography (for example, \u201cEye of the Chair\u201d, 1969). In his color still life works, Ulsman preferred close-up, unusual angle, intense color with the use of various coloristic effects (\u201cFrog\u201d, 1960s).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riga native Mikhail Gordin, who emigrated to the United States in the early 1970s, is characterized by a conceptual approach to photography. Following Ziskind, he creates a \u201cnew reality\u201d in his allegorical compositions (the series of black-and-white photographs \u201cCrowd\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many outstanding photographers worked in Germany, among whom there were many Jews. True, Jewish photography in Germany existed only until the mid-1930s, then some photographers emigrated, and others ended up in concentration camps, where most of them died. However, in Germany they achieved great success in the field of photojournalism. The founders of the modern German style were Jewish photographers Erich Salomon and Felix G. Mann (Hans Baumann).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berlin lawyer Salomon was one of the first to start working with small-format cameras. This opened up new possibilities for reportage photography, allowing for instant shots. Using the Ermanox camera, created in 1923, Salomon shot a series of reports that went down in the history of photojournalism. Salomon began to use the hidden camera method, which earned him the nickname \u201cthe king of declassified\u201d (a series of six photographs \u201cMarlene Dietrich talking on the phone from Hollywood with her daughter in Berlin\u201d, 1930).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His series “Rome, Hotel Excelsior, 1931” of Mussolini meeting with his associates became world famous. Salomon introduced the principle of “scoop” (English scoop – scandalous sensation) into photojournalism. He also created portraits of Sergei Eisenstein, Fridtjof Nansen and other celebrities. After the Nazis came to power, Salomon fled to the Netherlands, where he was captured and sent to Auschwitz, where he died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felix G. Mann became an innovator in the technical, artistic and stylistic aspects of photography, in particular, he used the technique of contrail, which allowed for the creation of slightly blurred contours and made the image of the person being photographed \u201cunconventional\u201d and more intimate. He also preferred the analysis of the event, showing the process of its development. He created the cycle \u201cTrench Life\u201d (1929) about the First World War, the world’s first cycles about musicians \u2013 \u201cIgor Stravinsky at the Conductor’s Desk\u201d, photo compositions about the famous conductor Arturo Toscanini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early 1930s, Mann published a series of photographs about the private lives of celebrities, which began with the series of photographs “A Day in the Life of Mussolini” (1931). Mann was one of the first creators of color photo-reportages (for example, a portrait of Marc Chagall, 1950). With the rise of the Nazis to power, Mann settled in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the development of print media in Israel, photojournalism also began to develop. Among the most significant Israeli photographers was Tim Gida (Ignat Nahum Gidalevitch), a representative of the modernist movement. His photographs were published not only in the Israeli but also in the foreign press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gida was a very versatile photographer. From 1930 to 1933, he made a series of photo reports in Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland, and even made three documentaries – “City on the Sand”, “Maccabiada” and “Nebi Musa”, which were shown in Germany under the general title “Eretz-Israel in 1935”. He was a photo correspondent for the Reuters agency, thanks to which the photo album “Children in Eretz-Israel” was published in Berlin. His works also include surrealist photomontages (“Kafka in Prague”, 1942), portraits<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(“Gandhi”, 1940), photographic works of modern fine art (“Self-portrait”, 1930), architectural landscapes. From 1956 to 1970, Gida created a series of 23 albums under the general title “My Town in \u2026” (1956-70) about each of the places he visited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israeli photographer Alfred Bernheim worked in portrait and genre photography, creating a portrait gallery of Israeli public figures and writers \u2013 Menachem Usyshkin, Chaim Weizmann, Gershem Scholem, Leah Goldberg, Shmuel Yosef Agnon, and others. His portraits are distinguished by their psychological depth and expressiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Micah Bar Am made his mark in 1954 on the archaeological expedition of Yigael Yadin. As a military photographer, he covered the Sinai Campaign and the Six-Day War. He was a staff photographer for the Israel Defense Forces weekly Ba-Machaneh and a photo correspondent for the New York Times. Bar Am aspired to be both a photojournalist and a photo artist (“Demonstration of Orthodox in Jerusalem”, 1967; “The Man Carrying the Dove of Peace”, 1977).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the early 1970s, photography was recognized as an art form in Israel. Photo schools and faculties dedicated to the art of photography began to open in the country. Famous photographers of that time were I. Barzilai, Dgania Brest, Gadi Dagon, Elia Kahvejan, Alex Levak, Gilad Ofir, Eli Ross (Rosenberg), Hannah Safie, Avraham Eilat, Inna Sand and many others. One of the brightest representatives of Israeli photography was Alize Auerbach (1940-2016), who won prizes at international photo competitions. She released several thematic photo albums about Israel. The modern generation of Israeli photographers continues the traditions of their teachers, comprehensively enriching the art of photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The master of Ukrainian documentary photography is Rita Ostrovska, a native of Kiev, currently living in Germany. No one can say better about her work than she herself: \u201cI photograph, trusting myself, my intuition, my vision, my excitement and my joy. I have a special relationship with all my works.\u201d Rita grew up in an environment of Jewish worldview and from childhood felt the difference between her family and the people around her. \u201cWe are very sensitive because we are Jews,\u201d says Rita. She visited and photographed 38 former shtetls in Ukraine, and as a result of the high appreciation of her work \u2013 an invitation to work on the series \u201cJews in Ukraine, Shtetl\u201d, 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With her works, Rita explores her own vision and what is happening around her. \u201cEach theme comes to me organically, as a new discovery, either from my childhood, adolescence, or from my reflections and feelings about my current life. Sometimes one grows out of another, expressing the most important things for me,\u201d Rita explains. \u201cEach of us follows our own circles of life. It\u2019s the same with creativity: if you search for yourself, you come to yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rita is a very fruitful and active person. She had many exhibitions and each one was special. Even during Soviet times, Rita remained herself, so she managed to organize her exhibitions \u201cJews in Ukraine\u201d (photographs of Jewish life in former towns), \u201cEmigrants\u201d (photographs of the life of Jewish emigrants in the USA, Germany and Israel). In 1996, Rita published a book of her photographs in Germany, \u201cJews in Ukraine. Towns, 1989-1994\u201d. She is the author of the projects \u201cCity and Citizens\u201d (1983-1988), \u201cMy Home\u201d (1983-2001), \u201cPortrait-Act\u201d (1986), \u201cJewish Album\u201d (1978-2001).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The talent of Ukrainian photographer Leonid Levit was manifested in portrait photography. He is a master of staged psychological photo-portraits, thanks to his mastery of the play of light and shadow, image and background. All of Levit’s works are black and white. For Levit, each of his photographs is, first of all, a portrait of a unique personality. Levit forces a person to appear as he is, reveals his personality, and seeks to reveal a hidden emotional state. He is the author of many personal exhibitions of chamber and psychological photo-portraits, including in the Kiev Sholem Aleichem Museum, which makes a significant contribution to promoting the work of Ukrainian photo masters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the most famous Jewish photographers whose work is connected to the Holocaust was the Russian-born American photographer Roman Vishnyak (1897-1990). He is best known for his socio-documentary photographs of Jewish life in Eastern Europe between the two world wars. Inspired by the cosmopolitanism and cultural experimentation of the time, Vishnyak began to photo-document his surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Socio-political photography became a priority for Vysniak, and in 1935 he was commissioned by the Jewish relief organization, the American Jewish United Distribution Committee, to photograph the destitute Jewish communities in Eastern Europe. The photographs were intended to support relief efforts and were used in fundraising campaigns. Moving to New York in 1941, Vysniak continued to document the aftermath of World War II, with a particular focus on the arrival of Jewish refugees and Holocaust victims in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jewish photographer Henryk Ross was living in Lodz when German troops invaded his city in 1939. Risking his life, he secretly photographed current events. Realizing the threat of deportation to a death camp, he buried a box of unique photographs near his house. After the liberation of Lodz in 1945, Ross returned home to find a box of photographs of evidence of Nazi crimes. Some of the photographs survived, and they are currently exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario (Canada) as a memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2012, American Jewish historian David Schnir published a book, Through the Eyes of a Soviet Jew. Photography, War, and the Holocaust, about the work of Jewish photojournalists. Schnir conducted extensive research, searching through personal collections and state archives for previously unpublished materials and photographs. In his book, the author describes the invaluable contribution of Jewish photographers to pre-revolutionary and Soviet Russian culture, and presents photographs of the war and the Holocaust in the context of a global understanding of the tragedy of the Jewish people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photography has become an important witness to the tragedy of the Holocaust. Collections of Holocaust photographs are on display around the world, including the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Israel, the Shimon Wiesenthal Institute in Vienna and Los Angeles, the Leo Beck Institute in New York, the Jewish Museum in Sydney, the State Jewish Museum in Prague, the Wiener Library, and museums established on the sites of former death camps such as Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Treblinka, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
