These materials are essential for the production of high-performance magnets, batteries, electronics and renewable energy infrastructure such as electric vehicles (EVs), wind turbines and solar panels.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The global rare earths industry is experiencing unprecedented demand driven by technological advancements, geopolitical dynamics, and the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions. However, the industry faces challenges including concentrated supply chains, environmental concerns, and price volatility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The global rare earth minerals industry, especially REE, has experienced significant market growth and is expected to continue to expand rapidly. According to industry reports, the global rare earth market was valued at US$3.95 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach US$6.28 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 8.6%. According to another estimate, the market will be US$12.44 billion in 2024 with a projected growth rate of 12.83%, reaching US$37.06 billion by 2033.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These forecasts reflect the growing demand for REEs in clean energy and high-tech applications. Similarly, the broader market for critical minerals, including lithium, cobalt and nickel, is expected to reach $320 billion in 2022, driven by a tripling of lithium demand, a 70% increase in cobalt demand and a 40% increase in nickel demand from 2017 to 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts at the International Energy Agency (IEA) predict that demand for rare earth elements could increase three to seven times by 2040, while demand for lithium could increase 40 times under climate scenarios such as the Zero Emissions 2050 (NZE) scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several factors are fueling the demand for rare minerals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The global drive towards zero emissions has accelerated the adoption of electric vehicles, wind turbines and energy storage systems, all of which rely heavily on rare earth minerals. For example, neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) are crucial for high-strength magnets used in electric vehicle motors and wind turbines, with neodymium alone accounting for 30.3% of the REE market revenue in 2024. Lithium, cobalt and nickel are indispensable for lithium-ion batteries, with demand for electric vehicle batteries accounting for 56% of lithium consumption in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rare earth minerals are an integral part of smartphones, laptops, medical devices, and defense applications such as missile guidance systems and fighter jets. Growing demand for consumer electronics in developing countries is a significant driver of growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Countries are prioritizing secure supply chains for rare earth minerals because of their strategic importance. For example, the United States and its allies are investing in domestic production and international partnerships to reduce dependence on China, which dominates global production and processing of rare earths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rapid industrialization in countries like India, coupled with population growth and rising incomes, is increasing the consumption of rare earth minerals in the automotive, construction, and electronics industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rare earths industry is characterized by a highly concentrated supply chain, with China dominating both mining and processing. In 2023, China accounted for 70% of global REE production (approximately 240,000 metric tons) and 87% of refined REE production. The Bayan Obo mine in Inner Mongolia remains the world’s largest REE deposit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States produced 45,000 metric tons of rare earth elements (REEs) in 2024, mostly at the Mountain Pass mine in California, owned by MP Materials. The United States is making significant investments in expanding domestic production, including $58.5 million in 2024 for rare earth magnet production in Texas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia produced an estimated 18,000 metric tons in 2024, with companies such as Lynas Rare Earths and Arafura Resources leading the way. The Nolans project in the Northern Territory is a key step for future supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myanmar produced 31,000 metric tons in 2024, but its production is controversial due to unregulated mining and environmental damage. It supplies 70% of China’s raw materials for the production of medium and heavy rare earths, including dysprosium and terbium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria and Thailand each produced 13,000 metric tons in 2024, which is already attracting attention, although their industries are still developing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The refining segment is even more concentrated. China controls 85% of the world\u2019s refining of rare earths and 65\u2013100% of other critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and graphite. This dominance gives China significant pricing power and control over supply, creating risks for global supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rare earth industry is closely linked to geopolitical tensions, particularly between China and Western countries. China\u2019s export restrictions, such as those imposed on seven rare earth minerals and permanent magnets in April 2025, highlight its ability to use its dominance as a weapon. Historical actions, such as the 2010 export ban to Japan during a maritime dispute, highlight this leverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US has responded with tariffs on Chinese REE imports (25% from 2026) and investment in domestic production through the Defense Production Act and the Inflation Reduction Act. However, experts note that building the full supply chain \u2014 from mining to processing and magnet production \u2014 requires significant capital and time, as the US still lags behind China\u2019s established infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other countries are also diversifying supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 6.9 million tonnes of REE reserves (the world’s third largest), India is working with Brazil and Australia to expand its supply chain and reduce its dependence on China. Recent government initiatives include auctioning lithium and REE deposits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vietnam, which holds 20% of the world’s REE reserves, is attracting foreign investment to develop its processing capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada has 15.2 million tonnes of REE reserves and is advancing projects such as the Saskatchewan Research Council’s processing plant, although commercial production remains limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these efforts, supply chain risks persist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extraction and processing of rare earth minerals is an environmentally intensive process, with risks such as water pollution and high carbon emissions. For example, unregulated mining in Myanmar has caused significant environmental damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disruptions in Myanmar’s Kachin State in late 2024 affected the supply of REE raw materials to China, highlighting the vulnerability of concentrated supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rare earth oxide prices are volatile due to low supply and China’s pricing power, affecting industries such as automotive and electronics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts provide varied but optimistic forecasts for the rare earth minerals industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), demand for copper, nickel, cobalt and rare earth elements (REEs) could double by 2040, while demand for graphite could potentially quadruple. Recycling could reduce mining needs by 25\u201340% by 2050, but $590 billion in new capital investment is needed to meet demand by 2040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Global analysts emphasize the need for significant investment in processing technologies to diversify supply chains. Vietnam’s potential as a major supplier of rare earths is noted, provided that processing capacities are developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discovery of a rare earth deposit in Wyoming by American Rare Earths could position the United States as a world leader, although development faces environmental and regulatory hurdles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The market growth to $37.06 billion by 2033 is driven by renewable energy and defense applications, with processing technologies gaining momentum to reduce supply risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges to growth include China\u2019s continued dominance, high production costs outside China, and environmental regulations that make new mining projects difficult. Innovations in recycling, such as developments at REEcycle and Cyclic Materials, and alternative materials can reduce reliance on primary mining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, Noveon Magnetics is a pioneer in the extraction of REE from electronic waste, while biochemical separation technologies are being developed to minimize environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asia-Pacific dominates with a revenue share of 86% in 2024, driven by China’s manufacturing and processing capabilities. India and Vietnam are also emerging as key players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US and Canada are investing in domestic production, with the US focusing on mine-to-magnet supply chains and Canada tapping its 15.2 million tonnes of reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe is the second largest market, driven by automotive demand (22.3% of global car production in 2024). Europe is exploring Greenland and Africa for new sources of rare earth elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nigeria’s entry into the top ten producers, as well as copper and lithium reserves in Latin America (such as Chile and Bolivia), are attracting Chinese and Western investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The global rare earths industry is at a critical juncture, driven by growing demand for clean energy and high-tech applications. While China’s dominance poses challenges, efforts by the United States, Australia, India and other countries to diversify supply chains are gaining momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expert estimates indicate steady market growth, with the REE market potentially reaching $37.06 billion by 2033, and critical minerals will require significant investment to meet future demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
