Законодавці та губернатор Монтани остаточно схвалили законопроект про заборону будь-якої діяльності компанії ByteDance, власника TikTok, на території штату. Кожне порушення передбачає штраф $10 000, але виплачувати його має сама компанія, а не користувачі.
Крім ByteDance, оштрафовані будуть будь-які магазини, що пропонують TikTok на території штату – насамперед це стосується Google Play та Apple App Store.
Заборона діятиме з 1 січня 2024 року і втратить чинність, якщо США ухвалять аналогічний федеральний акт або ByteDance розірве зв’язок з Китаєм. Очікується, що прецедент вплине на рішення інших штатів та федеральної влади.
Законодавці Монтани заявляють, що штат хоче бути лідером в обмеженні доступності TikTok, прокурор штату назвав відеосервіс «інструментом, який використовується китайським урядом для стеження за жителями Монтани».
Також губернатор Монтани Грег Джанфорте звинуватив месенджери Telegram, WeChat та додаток для покупок Temu у тому, що вони «пов’язані з іноземними противниками» і наказав заборонити їх на урядових пристроях та у всіх державних організаціях з 1 червня.
Джанфорте стверджує, що російський уряд використовує Telegram для «моніторингу користувачів та отримання особистої, важливої, конфіденційної інформації».

Montana lawmakers and the governor have finally approved a bill to ban ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, from operating in the state. Each violation carries a fine of $10,000, but the company itself has to pay it, not the users.
In addition to ByteDance, any stores that offer TikTok in the state will be fined – primarily Google Play and the Apple App Store.
The ban will take effect on January 1, 2024 and will expire if the US passes a similar federal act or ByteDance cuts ties with China. The precedent is expected to influence decisions by other states and the federal government.
Montana lawmakers say the state wants to take the lead in restricting TikTok’s availability, with the state’s attorney general calling the video service “a tool used by the Chinese government to track Montanans.”
Also, Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte accused Telegram messengers, WeChat and the Temu shopping app of being “affiliated with foreign adversaries” and ordered them banned from government devices and all government organizations starting June 1.
Gianforte claims that the russian government is using Telegram to “monitor users and obtain personal, sensitive, sensitive information.”
