У 20 років Марк Шагал зустрів у Вітебську Беллу Розенфельд та закохався у неї з першого погляду. Вона була з багатої сім’ї, її батько мав три ювелірні магазини. Саме тому батько дівчини не схвалював її шлюб із художником.
Белла ж вірила у геніальність Марка Шагала. Вона також займалася творчістю: писала вірші, малювала, відвідувала студію Костянтина Станіславського. Дівчина вільно володіла трьома мовами: російською, ідишем та французькою. Почуття молодих людей були взаємними, але художнику довелося виїхати до Парижа на чотири роки. Белла чекала на нього і дочекалася. Закохані побралися. Муза надихала Шагала створення картин з образами закоханих: його і Белли. На картинах вони безтурботно ширяли в повітрі, оскільки кохання окриляло їх. Наприклад, на відомому полотні «Над містом» Марк та Белла ширяють над містом, вони не звертають увагу на те, що відбувається навколо. У подружжя з’являється дочка Іда, зображена на картинах як ангел, що охороняє сім’ю. Художник та його муза прожили разом 29 років. У Нью-Йорку Белла захворіла на сепсис і померла. Навіть після її смерті авангардист писав образ коханої на полотнах.

Жінка була одружена, але її чоловік, театральний художник МакНіл потрапив до психіатричної лікарні. При цьому вона була із багатої сім’ї, її батько — колишній британський консул США. Однак батьки були проти її шлюбу, і Вірджинія не попросила у них гроші. Іда запропонувала їй роботу у батька, і жінка погодилася. Марк Шагал пожвавився після її появи в будинку, вони проводили разом час, розмовляли і нарешті закохалися одне в одного. Художникові було 58 років, а Вірджинії – 30. У закоханих народився син Давид. Він був позашлюбною дитиною, і Шагал не хотів, щоб хтось знав, що він зачав дитину під час жалоби по Беллі (за єврейськими законами він триває рік).
Незабаром Шагал купив будинок у Франції та переїхав туди з Вірджинією, її дочкою від першого шлюбу Джин та сином Давидом. Авангардист почав багато працювати, цей період мистецтвознавці вважають успішним у його творчості. Поступово Вірджинію почало обтяжувати, що вона проводить час тільки з Шагалом. Їй хотілося бути вільним, зустрічатися з різними людьми, допомагати іншим. Жінка зустріла бельгійського фотографа Шарля Лейренсома, котрий працював над репортажем. Він був протилежністю її чоловіка. Вірджинію тягло до нього, у них почався роман. Протягом трьох років жінка жила з чоловіком та зустрічалася з фотографом. Шагал здогадувався про її зраду і одного разу навіть побив її. У результаті вона пішла до Шарля та забрала дітей. Вірджинія та Марк прожили разом сім років.
Валентина Бродська
Марк Шагал страждав через відхід Вірджинії. Його дочка вирішила знову познайомити батька із жінкою. Іда домовилася з Валентиною Бродською, щоб та стала компаньйонкою для художника. Вава (так звали Валентину близькі) була власницею салону жіночих капелюхів. Красива, ділова, молода Бродська сподобалася Шагалу. Валентина теж причепилася до нього. У результаті закохані побралися. Після весільної подорожі до Греції вони вирішили жити у містечку Сен-Поль-де-Ванс недалеко від Ніцци.
У Вави був сильний характер, вона майстерно виконувала роль менеджера художника. Бродська намагалася обмежити чоловіка від спілкування з “непотрібними” людьми, до кола яких входили і його діти: Іда та Девід. Валентина контролювала життя чоловіка, яке картини почали приносити величезні гроші. У цьому Шагал не скаржився життя, він любив Ваву, але все-таки незвичайною жінкою йому залишалася Белла.

At the age of 20, Marc Chagall met Bella Rosenfeld in Vitebsk and fell in love with her at first sight. She came from a wealthy family; her father owned three jewelry stores. That is why the girl’s father did not approve of her marriage to the artist.
Bella believed in the genius of Marc Chagall. She was also creative: she wrote poems, painted, and visited the studio of Konstantin Stanislavsky. The girl was fluent in three languages: Russian, Yiddish and French. The feelings of the young people were mutual, but the artist had to leave for Paris for four years. Bella waited for him and waited. The lovers got married. The muse inspired Chagall to create paintings with images of lovers: him and Bella. In the paintings they floated serenely in the air as love inspired them. For example, in the famous painting “Above the City,” Mark and Bella are soaring above the city, they do not pay attention to what is happening around them. The couple has a daughter, Ida, who is depicted in the paintings as an angel protecting the family. The artist and his muse lived together for 29 years. In New York, Bella fell ill with sepsis and died. Even after her death, the avant-garde artist painted the image of his beloved on canvas.
Virginia Haggard
Ida saw that after the death of her mother, her father was plunged into worries. The daughter decided to find him a caring helper around the house. One day she visited Central Park and saw an attractive woman playing with her five-year-old daughter. Ida approached her. It turned out that it was the Englishwoman Virginia Haggard, she needed money. The woman was married, but her husband, theater artist McNeil, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Moreover, she was from a wealthy family, her father was a former British consul of the United States. However, her parents were against her marriage, and Virginia did not ask them for money. Ida offered her a job with her father, and the woman agreed. Marc Chagall perked up after her appearance in the house, they spent time together, talked and finally fell in love with each other. The artist was 58 years old, and Virginia was 30. The lovers had a son, David. He was an illegitimate child, and Chagall did not want anyone to know that he conceived a child during the mourning period for Bella (according to Jewish law, it lasts a year).
Soon Chagall bought a house in France and moved there with Virginia, her daughter from her first marriage, Jean, and her son David. The avant-garde artist began to work a lot; art critics consider this period successful in his work. Gradually, Virginia began to feel burdened by the fact that she spent time only with Chagall. She wanted to be free, meet different people, help others. The woman met Belgian photographer Charles Leirensom, who was working on the report. He was the opposite of her husband. Virginia was drawn to him, and they began an affair. For three years, the woman lived with her husband and dated a photographer. Chagall guessed about her betrayal and once even beat her. As a result, she went to Charles and took the children. Virginia and Mark lived together for seven years.
Valentina Brodskaya
Marc Chagall suffered because of Virginia’s departure. His daughter decided to introduce her father to the woman again. Ida agreed with Valentina Brodskaya to become a companion for the artist. Vava (that’s what Valentina’s relatives called) was the owner of a ladies’ hat salon. Chagall liked the beautiful, businesslike, young Brodskaya. Valentina also became attached to him. As a result, the lovers got married. After a honeymoon to Greece, they decided to live in the town of Saint-Paul-de-Vence near Nice.
Vava had a strong character, she skillfully performed the role of the artist’s manager. Brodskaya tried to limit her husband from communicating with “unnecessary” people, which included his children: Ida and David. Valentina controlled her husband’s life, and his paintings began to bring in huge amounts of money. At the same time, Chagall did not complain about life, he loved Vava, but still Bella remained an extraordinary woman for him.
